The exhibition, which opened Wednesday at the University Museum of Contemporary Art, was followed by a reception attended by UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy as well as the collector of the art, Jordan Schnitzer, who both spoke about the pieces.

The University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA) at UMass Amherst is proud to present Emancipating the Past: Kara Walker’s Tales of Slavery and Power. Kara Walker has become one of the most widely‐known and controversial artists working today. Exploring the painful history of American race relations through large‐scale silhouette installations, Walker’s work transforms historical materials, literary sources and popular culture, challenging us to access buried emotions about our nation’s past.
The exhibit is one view from February 2 - April 30, 2017. The opening reception is on Wednesday, February 1, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM with a talk by the Collector, Jordan D. Schnitzer.

In advance of the upcoming exhibition, Richard Serra: Prints, two articles appear in the Nasher Sculpture Center's publication, “The Nasher,” highlighting Serra and his work. The exhibit, drawn from the collections of Portland-based art collector Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, will provide viewers with a greater understanding of how the artist transitioned between methods (lithography, silkscreen, etching), experimented with materials and scale, and created works that lay bare the process of printmaking.
