The Wisconsin Gazette's Michael Muckian covered Frank Stella Prints: A Retrospective at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Muckian discusses the abstract nature of Stella's work, writing, "Artist Frank Stella has a simple answer for those who ask for the content and meaning behind his abstract prints, paintings and sculptures: 'What you see is what you see.'"
“Abstract painting and sculpture refers only to itself,” Rick Axsom, curator of the exhibition, explains. “There is no story or other reference. It’s like music that has the ability to be pure sound, yet deliver with emotional power.”
The retrospective features 85 prints and paintings from the artist's 50-plus year career, all but one drawn from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. See the exhibition now through May 15th.
