Emancipating the Past: Kara Walker's Tales of Slavery and Power opened Friday, September 11th at the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, MO. Drawn from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, the exhibit explores Kara Walker’s transformation of historical materials through a range of different projects, bringing together some of her earliest and most recent artworks.
The Springfield News-Leader's Camille Dautrich notes that Walker's art is edgy and controversial, addressing the painful history of American race relations. "That’s exactly why I wanted to show it here," said art collector and philanthropist Jordan Schnitzer. "These issues are as relevant today as they’ve ever been."
The exhibition is on view through January 3rd, 2016.
